A Trip to the City of Mozart
The Old Town of Salzburg is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. The magic of the baroque city in the northern foothills of the Alps fascinates people of all cultures. The sight of the Old Town is unforgettable: the Hohensalzburg fortress, the castle that could never be conquered, is majestically seated above the city of Mozart as the town’s landmark. At the foot of the castle lies the mighty Salzburg cathedral, plated with valuable Untersberg marble. Its facade is the stage setting for the famous theatre production “Jedermann”, which has been performed as an integral part of the Salzburg Festival since 1920. The beautiful Old Town with the magnificent Residenz the picturesque Getreidegasse, where Mozart’s house of birth still stands, and the large city squares, has been appointed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This ensures that the beauty of this city is preserved for many generations to come.
The history of Salzburg goes as far back as the Celts, and later the Romans founded a settlement here called “Juvavum”. Since time immemorial the mineral resources of the region were the reason for the wealth of the Salzburg sovereigns. Whether salt from Halleiner Duerrnberg or marble from Untersberg, the church heads of the archbishopric city of Salzburg knew how to use the materials to an advantage. They built the Salzburger Residenz, the Neue Residenz, Schloss Mirabell, Schloss Hellbrunn and many other buildings as a demonstration of their power. And they proved themselves as builders of this great city, of which the unique architecture is still as impressive as it ever was.
